Ho Chi Minh City's Electric Vehicle Market: Strong Growth Trend
In the context of the global shift towards green energy, the electric vehicle market in Ho Chi Minh City is heating up day by day. Numerous electric motorcycle and car models from major brands are flooding the city, sparking a wave of increased activity in the buying and selling of used motorcycles and pre-owned cars. Additionally, the demand for "selling cars at a high price" has become more pressing as vehicle owners aim to maximize their financial gains before upgrading to electric vehicles.
Currently, the market offers a wide range of electric bicycles and electric motorcycles, from imported brands to locally manufactured and assembled models. Prices start from just 8 million VND for electric bicycles, ranging from 13–20 million VND for regular electric motorcycles, and reaching up to 50 million VND for premium models. Compared to gasoline motorcycles, the price difference is not significant, but the operational costs are much lower: a full charge (8–10 hours) allows for 70–80 km of travel, with a cost of only 4,000–6,000 VND.
The two main technologies for electric vehicles today are:
Lead-acid batteries (commonly used for electric bicycles).
Lithium batteries (used for electric motorcycles), which offer longer travel ranges and higher durability.
The notable advantages of electric vehicles include their low maintenance costs, the fact that they don’t require oil changes, their ease of control, making them ideal for women, seniors, and students. Manufacturers typically offer warranties on batteries for 18 months or more, along with simple maintenance packages.
Ho Chi Minh City has announced a roadmap to replace 400,000 gasoline vehicles with electric vehicles in four stages starting from 2026, with financial support policies, tax incentives, and the "old vehicle exchange for a new electric vehicle" program designed to make it easier for residents to access these eco-friendly alternatives.
"In the past, we sold one vehicle per week, but now customers come every day to inquire about prices. Some days we sell up to 2–3 vehicles. Most customers are parents and workers. If there are additional financial support policies, the number of customers will definitely increase significantly," said Ms. Lê Thị Thương, the owner of an electric vehicle store in Tân Đông Hiệp.
However, challenges related to charging infrastructure in apartment buildings and the cost of installing personal charging stations have led some individuals, like Ms. Hoài Vy from Thanh Đa, to hesitate: “Apartments don’t allow electric vehicles to be charged in the rooms, and there are no public charging stations yet, so even though I really want to switch to an electric vehicle, it's still difficult."
Incentive Programs from Brands
VinFast: The "Trade Gas for Electric" campaign – vehicle trade-ins, discounts on electric vehicles, and free charging at V-GREEN stations until May 2026.
Yadea: Offering to buy back old motorcycles, with support of up to 9–10 million VND when switching to electric motorcycles, plus gift vouchers and a 3-year battery warranty.
Honda Vietnam: Experimenting with an electric motorcycle rental model, offering the Honda ICON e: (from 26.8 million VND) and the CUV e: (rental only at 1.5 million VND/month, including 2 batteries and 2 chargers).
